A young German scholar from Marburg has just got in touch, and reported two references in Russian on this much-neglected topic:

As she points out, there is VERY little written on the subject, even (or perhaps especially) in Russian. I’ve urged her to carry on and do some fieldwork. The curators of these museums must be fast retiring, and it would be invaluable to interview them before it’s too late.
